My name is James. I am a divorced father of three, the fallout from the divorce has split the family in such a painful way. My teenage son now lives with me and my two daughters live with their mom who is so very angry with me. I have tried to stay positive choosing to look at the good that is left over, but unfortunately there is such a dramatic gap in how we have all responded. Tragically the negative patterns of blaming and despair has absolutely traumatized all of us.
I have found your work absolutely on point in explaining how we can best work through the poop we have created. I wont get into details of events and dynamics which led us here, but your talks about how to move on from traumatic events are such an inspiration and bright light giving me clear and hopeful strategies that confirm how I should continue to help support my kids. I can only hope my two daughters and their mother will also confirm it is best to live positively with love and be at peace with our circumstance. I am confident joy is right around the corner.

I love goal-setting. Ann’s ideas of making them reality make a lot of sense.

It reminded me that I wanted to research visualization. As I was looking on-line I ran across an article that surprised me: http://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2011/06/08/visualize-success-if-you-want-to-fail/ . I don’t believe everything I read and I’m not sure how well the research was done. But, they present the argument that if your sub-conscious thinks that you’ve met the goal, it relaxes and doesn’t try as hard.

Anyway, it made me wonder because it sounds like Ann’s findings are very different. Maybe it is because her approach of having people write their life vision and listen to their recording of it is different.

How do you feel about visualization?

I stumbled onto your podcast via a Google search “athletes recovering from addiction.”

After listening to your show I wanted to complement you on the quality of podcast; both the enlightening content and quality of the audio – uplifting and encouraging!

Those enlightening thoughts and words of wisdom expressed by Blu and his wife about the therapeutic benefits of vigorous outdoor exercise are right on the money, in my personal experience people who are working toward building a new life style in recovery benefit greatly from vigorous outdoor exercise.

I started my recovery journey in 2002. After completing a short 60 day treatment program, form there, I transitioned to a sober living. I committed my self to living in a sober living environment for a undetermined period of time. Based on my adaptation to the sober living lifestyle I was offered a position managing a 23 bed sober living here in the Los Angeles area – this was a incredible learning experience – the life lessons that I learned enabled me to gain a 30,000 Foot View perspective on the game of life.

The above is only about 1% of my travels on the road of “Ruin to Redemption.”

Today, I pursue a daily commitment to personal development regimen and consider my self a “Student of Recovery.” I also working consistently on creating future recovery related career opportunities.

I believe that establishing a long term recovery strategy is a must.

I also know from experience that that their is no substitute for a professional post treatment aftercare program that involves community and a ongoing….. NEVER ENDING commitment.

I am currently stetting up guest speaker commitments at local sober livings, local treatment centers and Alcoholics Anonymous H&I Hospitals and Institutions

Lastly, the time commitment and energy that you have committed to planning, producing and publishing your podcast show are very much appreciated – podcast production is WORK!

I agree, so many people watch or read “The Secret” and then later think it is a lame joke because it does not work for them. The problem being, they are not making it work.

I love the concept of “believe and THEN see” (or “Faith Precedes the Miracle”). I also thought of another way to say it, while listening to this podcast: “See and then Believe and then you will See”.

In the example you gave, it sounds to me like the feedback is something like, “Jo – my experience of you is that I can’t discuss these things with you without tipping things over or stoking the fire.” Remember also that this feedback is not necessarily about you – it is always about the experience of the person giving the feedback. Then, you get to look at what part of it is useful to you – “Hmmm… what is it about me that has you experiencing me that way?” In that case, all feedback can be useful and informative – it is just information. On another level altogether, we don’t get to control whether others want to engage with us in a conversation, or for that matter, whether they even choose to like us!

You are practicing what you preach by asking for feedback to this podcast. Now here’s my attempt to practice what you preach by asking a question. You suggest to be open and ask questions. This is good stuff…but what can I do with feedback like the following: During a recent conflict I asked for a loved one to explaining why they felt I offended them so badly. The feedback was, “…the things that have bothered me about you in the past I no longer remember any more, nor do I care…I don’t really see a resolve for the situation so it’s hard to address it. I don’t want things to get worse or make our relationship suffer because of it so I don’t want to address it either.” It was also expressed that the loved one wanted to disassociate from me and my family. Or when I’ve hurt someone I care about so badly that the feedback they give me is, “Don’t ever expect to hear from me again.” What do I do with this kind of seemingly hopeless and uninformative feedback?

Thank you so much for listening to Live On Purpose Radio! I hope you found it to be informative and helpful. You asked about some of my thoughts regarding Mr. Abagnale. I heard Mr. Abagnale speak in Salt Lake City last fall, after having already seen the movie, “Catch Me If You Can.” The thing that impressed me the most about his presentation then was his emphasis on family and ethics. I approached him after the meeting, and he very graciously agreed to do the interview. Here is a man who has experienced so many things that astound most people. In all of that experience, he came to the conclusion that family is the most important thing in the world. I was also impressed with his strong advocacy for ethics and morals. It is just so important to do the right things for the right reasons. What an inspiration that someone can make the kind of mistakes that Frank made, and still put his life back together. If Frank W. Abagnale can do it, then maybe you or I can do it too. I am so glad that Mr. Abagnale is using his influence now to empower and inspire. Our world is a better place because of his impact and legacy. He’s not proud of the crimes that he committed, and the people who were hurt as a result – but his is a powerful voice for choice and accountability now that he has learned what life is all about.

I’m a LCSW with SD and was in private practice for 15 years when a combination of difficult circumstances (husband’s health crisis, low point newish SD, personal conflicts) led me to take an extended leave of absence from my practice, a kind of hibernation from the world or perhaps I simply crawled into my victim corner, as you put it. Which actually made things worse, as you can imagine, although this “worst” place led me to seek out a variety of experiences and practices that have been good. I’m doing much better now, am back in practice (one of my clients is another therapist with a vocal disorder, though not SD). Wish I had found you earlier but I’m glad to have discovered you now. Thanks for the great work you’re doing.

Interesting like you said. Had you not given it away, I would have thought the guest was leading up to a position against the passage of Prop 8, then somehow turned it all around. Made me think of those old newsreels we saw in school about the civil rights issues in the 60’s. The guest mentioned that government was like a fire that is good when contained and bad when not–to which I totally agree. He talks about how when one group is successful in limiting the freedom of conscience of another it is bound to come around and bite the other group in the butt (totally paraphrased). But I wonder that when a group has been denied their freedom of conscience (and a lot of other freedoms as well) for a very long time as in the case of the african-americans in the US. If the subsequent laws (like a lot of the civil rights legislation) that come as a reaction and clearly limit the freedom of conscience of others (like the hiring quotas etc.) are not the same kind of clear consequence to the prior limiting of African-America freedoms. Seems like the same thing is happening now with the gay agenda. Those who disagree with the agenda are finding their freedom of conscience limited, but doesn’t this come as a natural reaction to the gays having their freedoms limited for so long? Seems really obvious to me–but maybe I’m just missing something. I’m not a PHD student. The concept he taught seems totally sound, but wow–what a reversal on the application.

This new amendment is a type of new legislation, new restriction, new limitation of freedom of conscience. I’m just not seeing how not passing new limitations of concience (prop 8), can limit the existing conscience of the “majority.” Sounds like rationalizing a smack down of a minority freedom of conscience to me. Bizarre that this can even be argued both ways–seems so obvious to me that government doesn’t belong in the marriage business at all.

Most of my family is still with me on it but a few have dropped out like my spouse.
Even though I am in 32 local stores to test market my product I am without advertising funds to move forward quickly.
I’m hitting the pavement and going to doctor, dentist, medical professional’s, tattoo shops and more to get the word out there about my product. It is so slow. I am lacking the print and air time in advertising, which holds me back the most.
Never the less, I’m inching my way and I’m still “working” on the impossible. I appreciate the encouraging words that are out there.

It was sometimes difficult to hear who was talking, as your voices sounded so similar, but the content was great. As a self-employed person who also has been actively using the Law of Attraction (long before I knew what it was or that it had a name), I have had similar experiences where I ask for help and the solution (however unusual it may be) shows up in an effortless way. Marketing myself (two businesses) became so much easier when I discovered this process.

Just wanted to share something after listening to this podcast.

I’ve been having a ball picking apart John Locke’s 1690 “Second Treatise on Government”. It’s full of gems that are familiar to us; further evidence that these are well-established principles that endure time.

I’ve just started Chapter 6, “Of parental Power”, but he’s quick to hit upon points that you’ve mentioned before in the model of control and maturity. Here’s a relevant item that should sound familiar:

§ 58. The power, then, that parents have over their children arises from that duty which is incumbent on them, to take care of their offspring during the imperfect state of childhood. To inform the mind, and govern the actions of their yet ignorant nonage [years of minority], till reason shall take its place, and ease them of that trouble, is what the children want, and the parents are bound to
[end quote]

He also uses analogy, saying it is “like the swaddling-clothes they are wrapt up in, and supported by, in the weakness of their infancy: age and reason, as they grow up, loosen them, till at length they drop quite off, and leave a man at his own free disposal” (§55).

I’ve only started this chapter, but his message thus far revolves around that of a person gradually learning to walk by reason, or as we say today, taking control of his own life and living on purpose.

It was so good to hear Craig’s voice again and feel his spirit. I Love the book 5 Love Languages, when I read it, it changed drastically my understanding of my husband, Larry’s love language. It opened his eyes to what worked best for him also. His love language is physical touch and mine is quality time, his number two is acts of service. It’s been a huge process but we are really trying to give to one other what each other desires rather than what we desire. Thank you for this podcast.

It prepared me for a very similar journey.

” My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. ”

I have been listening to your podcasts as you suggested, and I am finding them very inspiring and uplifting. “Facing Your Giants” in particular has really made me think about the trials I currently face. I feel that I am closer to putting things into the right perspective(or finding the right pair of ‘glasses’ to view life).

A specific comment you made really hit home and filled me with an intense hope and longing. You urged us all to become heroes. I have always dreamed and fantasized about being a hero, but I never truly believed it could be a reality. I stopped believing in Superman long, long ago. More importantly, I stopped trying to BE superman–even for my family. I no longer see a hero potential in myself.

After listening to this podcast, I have faith that I can face my giants and be victorious. I sincerely believe that such victories will be the fuel to restore my confidence in my potential for heroism.

Thank you for everything, Dr. Paul and Mr. Johansen. You are heroes to many, including me.
